As you read The Mezzanine, keep in mind that it is not so much about story, as you would find in the typical novel, but more about writing. This is one book where it is more important for you to read the words and understand how they are used than in trying to figure out where the author is taking the story. Because the answer is the author is taking you nowhere, except perhaps to the top of an escalator. The Mezzanine was Baker’s first novel and today he is considered one of the country’s top literary stylists. For a major publisher to take on a first-time author whose novel contains virtually no story is a highly unusual phenomenon in the publishing industry.
